Carpenters House East Lothian

Our clients fell in love with the village of Stenton and the rich potential in this property when they visited this old 'B' Listed carpenter's house when it was put up for sale. Shortly after the completion of the purchase, they contacted Loader Monteith to discuss the idea of transforming the outbuildings, removing a rather unsightly 1970s extension, and forming a new contemporary addition to help connect the house to the walled garden.

The house was in a significant state of disrepair - with no less than three structures holding up the main house roof! This demanded the removal of the whole structure, including the first floor, and rebuilding almost everything. We were involved in significant discussions with Historic Scotland in order to facilitate the changes to this 17th Century property - which included putting rooms into the roof, formation of a new corten dormer to the rear, and the new extension to the garden side.

We love the material variety this house offers, and while the journey to get from idea to reality has taken a while, the clients and their growing family are thrilled with the outcome.
